National Chess League: Kireka eases past Comrades, ascends top

Kireka A ascended to the summit of the National Chess League on Sunday thanks to their victory over Comrades in the eighth round at Hotel Africana.

The defending champions whacked Comrades 4-1, with Fide Masters Harold Wanyama and Haruna Nsubuga plus Woman Fide Master Goretti Angolikin winning their games, while Simon Gonza and Edgar Ntende drew their respective games.

Wanyama, on board one beat Innocent Kimera, while Nsubuga saw off Isaac Otim and Angolikin edged Victoria Nakirya. Gonza settled for a draw against Ivan Mukuye while Ntende drew against Rogers Ntambi.

Earlier, the side captained by Ivan Kaddu had beaten their sister club Kireka B 4.5-0.5 in the seventh round without International Master Arthur Ssegwanyi and Wanyama taking part. Read moreHere

With less than three days left to the start of the 2017 National Chess League, thirty three teams have confirmed participation.

The 33 are a mixture of last year’s Division 1 and Division 2 leagues. This follows Uganda Chess Federation’s [UCF] decision to merge the two divisions into one pool, meaning clubs will not be relegated to the lower division.

The Royal Knights are among the 33 teams. The side will be competing in the league for the first time ever.

While The Royal Knights have joined the league, Maisha Chess Club are yet to communicate their stand. Out of the 30 teams that competed last season, only Maisha hasn’t shown interest.

The 2017 edition of the National Schools Chess Championships will be hosted by Mount of Olives College Kakiri in Wakiso district, Uganda Chess Federation [UCF] has confirmed.

The event that commences on 5th May has attracted over 40 primary and secondary schools from across the country, and Namilyango College come as defending champions in the boys’ category, while St Mbuga Vocational SSS are reigning champions in the girls’ category.

With Michael Basangwa, Solomon Mugoda, Innocent Kamya and Eric Mboiz, some of the top young players in the country as their representatives, Namilyango are favorites to retain the title they won last year, but record champions St Mbuga will try to regain glory.

The seven day event will be used to handpick representatives for this year’s African Schools Individual Chess Championships that will take place in Namibia in August, choose representatives at the World Cadet U-8, U-10, U-12 Chess Championships in Brazil as well as selecting those who will represent the country at the World Youth U-14, 16 and U-18 Chess Championships in Uruguay later this year.

Kings College Budo, Makerere College, Bishop McAllister in Bushenyi, Ntare SS, St Maria Gorreti Katende, Jinja College Butiki, Busoga College Mwiri, St Masero Academy, Kibuka Mixed Primary School, Good times Kawala Primary School, Kyandodo SS, Silver Spoon Primary School are among the schools that will take part.
