19 year old Haruna Nsubuga won the 2011 National Junior Chess Championship after amassing 7 points out of 8 games played in the event held at Hotel Africana in Kampala from 14th to 15th May 2011.
To win the tournament, Nsubuga won seven games and lost only one to Richard Tugume. He beat Abdul Setyabule, ladies Olympian Phiona Mutesi, Carol Nabachwa, Derrick Nyombi, Brian Mugabi, Benjamin Mukumbya and Richard Kato.
Early pace setter, 15 year old Mukumbya was upstaged in the sixth round when he lost a hard fought battle to a more experienced Ivan Mutesasira and later to Nsubuga.
Although a regular participant in national tournaments and in the National Chess League in which he features for Kireka Chess Club, Nsubuga had not won any major tournament before.
The girls category was won by Joan Nakimuli with 4.5 points. This time round the girls and boys competed against each other in the same pool and individual winners were picked out based on points scored.
The age category of under 10 years was won by Paul Kabuyanga in the boys category and Gloria Nansubuga in the girls' category.
11-13 years age group (girls) category was won by Stella Babirye at 3 points while the boys section was won by Richard Kato at 5.5 points.
14-16 years age group category (girls) was won by Olympian Phiona Mutesi with 4 points and the boys section was won by Richard Buyinza with 6 points.
The category of 17 years and above ws won by Carol Nabacha and Richard Tugume with 3 points and 6 points respectively.
