Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has once again come to the aid of Uganda Chess Federation by funding the Rwabushenyi Memorial Chess Championship to the tune of ten million six hundred thousand shillings (10,600,000/=) for the 6th time running. The highly competitive Championship is to be held over two consecutive weekends from Saturday 5th - Sunday 6th and Saturday 12th – Sunday 13th December 2015 at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
The event is also doubling as the first phase of the Olympiad Qualifiers for Ugandan players where the top 30 male participants from this event will proceed to the second phase of the Qualifiers due to be held next year. The number of ladies proceeding to the next phase will depend on the total number of ladies registered but will be communicated to the players before the start of the event.
CAA is supporting this biggest local event on the Uganda Chess Federation calendar in memory of the Authority’s former Director Airports, the late Cyril Rwabushenyi who was also a long serving Chairman and one of the founder members of the Uganda Chess Federation.
UCF's Vice President, Robinah Namwanje expressed gratitude for the support from CAA which was confirmed this week and said "the organization had consistently demonstrated loyalty in supporting the sport in memory of the late Rwabushenyi who did a lot for Chess and aviation in Uganda". She promised that the Federation would put the sponsorship package to good use by presenting a quality event in line with FIDE standards and conditions.
About 200 chess players including school children in holidays are expected to participate in the event that is going to be FIDE rated in the Open and Ladies Categories. "This will help players to improve on their ratings and those without ratings to acquire international ratings", Namwanje added.
Cash prizes and trophies are to be given out to the winners in the various categories and all the players will get branded Polo T-shirts. The top cash prize in the Open category is one million Uganda shillings (1,000,000/=) and there are up to 5 prizes in the Open and 5 in the ladies categories with the total ammount to be given out in cash prizes totalling three million four hundred fifty thousand shillings.
