CAA SPONSORS 11.3 M RWABUSHENYI MEMORIAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has sponsored the Uganda Chess Federation organized Rwabushenyi Memorial Chess Championship to the tune of eleven million three hundred thousand shillings (11,300,000/=) for the 5th time running. The highly competitive Championship is to be held from Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th January 2015 at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Rubaga.

CAA is supporting the biggest local event on the Uganda Chess Federation calendar in memory of the Authority’s former Director Airports, the late Cyril Rwabushenyi who was also a long serving Chairman and one of the founder members of the Uganda Chess Federation. "The sponsorship is in line with CAA’s corporate social responsibility objective of giving back to the community in support of noble social and economic development activities. Chess being a challenging brain game is one of those activities that contribute towards positive development of the mental faculties of young people," said CAA’s Manager Public Affairs, Ignie Igunduura after handing over a dummy cheque of 11.3 million shillings to the Federation in Entebbe. He further hailed the late for having done a lot for the development of chess and aviation in Uganda.

On his part, UCF’s General Secretary, Christopher Turyahabwe expressed gratitude for the support from CAA and said "it is the biggest sponsorship for a Chess tournament in the history of the Federation and we shall put the money to good use by presenting a quality event, in line with FIDE standards and conditions." "About 200 chess players including Kenyans and Somali’s are expected to participate in the event that is already registered with FIDE for international rating. This will help players to improve on their ratings and those without ratings to acquire international ratings."

Turyahabwe added. Cash prizes and trophies are to be given out to the winners in the various categories (Open, Ladies, Under 15 years and Under 10 years) and all the players will get branded Polo T-shirts.
